Kilhope Lead Mine waterwheels

On A689 Bishop Auckland to Alston road, 2½ miles W of Cowshill.

A lead ore-crushing mill built in 1878-9; the 34-ft diameter wheel dominates the site. Two smaller waterwheels also in working order. A further 18 ft underground waterwheel is used for pumping. Café, woodland walks, shop, exhibitions. Guided mine tours.

Opening times

April to October, daily, 10.30-17.00. Parties by arrangement, all year.
