Coulton Mill, Hovingham
Location Grid reference: SE 643 736
Postcode: YO62 4ND
In a valley between the villages of Coulton and Scackleton in North Yorkshire.
Reputed to be referred to in documents from the 13th century, although local knowledge
says that the gearing is from the 18th. The mill is not operational as the gearing is too fragile,
and is in almost the same condition as the present owners found it. The undergrowth and trees have been removed
and some of the corrugated iron from the hurst frame has been removed, otherwise it is as it stopped
in the late 1940s. The pit should be excavated in 2011.
Opening times Not open to the public due to the poor condition of the buildings. Telephone to enquire.
National Mills Weekend opening times Sunday only, 12.00-17.00.
Contact Heather and Nick Burrows, tel. 01653 628457.
